Redevelopment of Hornsey Police Station: A Modern Transformation
The redevelopment of Hornsey Police Station stands as a testament to how historic buildings can be reimagined for modern use. Built in 1884 on Tottenham Lane, this iconic station was originally part of a civic complex alongside a fire station and library. After its closure in March 2021, as part of City Hall’s plans to save costs and reinvest in frontline policing, the site was earmarked for redevelopment.
Thanks to the approved plans by Koukan Developments, the station has been transformed into a vibrant residential development, offering 29 homes that blend historic preservation with contemporary design. The original police station has been carefully refurbished and extended to include six terraced houses and four flats. Two additional blocks were constructed to expand the site’s housing capacity: a four-storey building on Tottenham Lane with four houses and seven flats, and a three-storey block at Harold Road and Glebe Road, providing eight flats at London Affordable Rent levels.
Although the design sparked mixed reactions—some critics expressed concerns about its alignment with the Edwardian style of the Hillfield Conservation Area—the redevelopment has been widely recognized for its contribution to addressing the housing demand in North London.
